Addition
Addition means putting things together. It helps us find the total or sum.
- Example: 234 + 156 = 390
- Add numbers with or without carrying.
- Order does not matter: 12 + 8 = 8 + 12
Subtraction
Subtraction means taking away. It helps us find the difference.
- Example: 500 - 275 = 225
- Subtract numbers with or without borrowing.
- Order matters: 15 - 7 ≠ 7 - 15
Multiplication
Multiplication is repeated addition. It helps us find the total when we have equal groups.
- Example: 6 × 4 = 24 (which is 6 + 6 + 6 + 6)
- Order does not matter: 3 × 5 = 5 × 3
- Multiplication tables up to 10 or 12 are important.
Division
Division means sharing or grouping equally. It helps us find how many in each group or how many groups.
- Example: 20 ÷ 4 = 5
- Division is the opposite of multiplication.
- Order matters: 12 ÷ 3 ≠ 3 ÷ 12
Word Problems
Problem: Riya has 3 boxes. Each box has 8 pencils. How many pencils does she have in all?
Solution: 3 × 8 = 24 pencils.
Problem: There are 45 apples. If 9 apples are put in each basket, how many baskets are needed?
Solution: 45 ÷ 9 = 5 baskets.
Summary
Computation operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) help us solve real-life problems and make calculations easier.
