Introduction

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator and a denominator.

Types of Fractions

  • Proper Fractions: Numerator is smaller than the denominator. Example: 2/7
  • Improper Fractions: Numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator. Example: 9/4
  • Mixed Fractions: Combination of a whole number and a fraction. Example: 2 1/3

Operations on Fractions

Addition

Example: 3/7 + 2/7 = 5/7

Subtraction

Example: 5/6 - 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2

Multiplication

Example: 2/3 × 4/5 = 8/15

Division

Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8

Word Problems

Problem: Ravi ate 2/5 of a pizza, his sister ate 1/5. How much was eaten in total?

Solution: 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
